What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a way to learn to process emotion so that our emotions can be experienced as wisdom rather than problems and pain in the body. Emotions are the feelings we have about our experiences. They are feelings in the body, of warmth in the chest, tightness in the stomach, tingling in the hands. In somatic therapy we learn to allow these feelings to move through us and guide us, instead of tensing against them and holding onto them.
The great news is that our body is designed to process emotion! The bad news is that no one gave us a manual for how to do that, so trauma of any kind, particularly in early childhood, traps us into painful patterns that we repeat. This repetition of painful patterns is experienced at every level. For example if a person holds the body crouched forward with shoulders hunched, they are communicating that the body is in danger and needs to be protected. This leads to a heightened feeling of fear and anxiety that is ever-present that you may not even notice on a daily basis, but influences how you feel meeting new people or analyzing opportunities and experiences. It affects your mind and hormonal systems so you feel an ever-present danger even when you are safe.
In Somatic therapy we bring our conscious awareness to our unconscious patterns, we look at them together and we work to let go of the patterns that are harming us. What is left in the space of this old pattern is the experience of freedom. The nervous system is no longer on high alert and you have access to your higher faculties and can make better decisions for yourself in a calm and relaxed bodily environment.

What is an average session like?
The first thing we do in every session is establish a deep sense of safety and security. We do this through breathing together, and if you are in-person and comfortable with it, I may introduce some gentle touch. If we are virtual I may guide you in gentle touch with yourself. Once the safety is established we will use breath, conversation and movement to connect with your inner world. We will work with an emotion held in the body, allow it to speak, be heard and understood. We will conciously bring our awareness to the space of the emotion and with the feelings we experience once the emotion has been processed. Each time we do this you will become more skilled in the language of your own body and subconsious programming. I will teach you movements and practices that align with areas you want to grow in so you can feel free and connected to yourself and live the life you want.
Throughout our sessions, we will work together to uncover any patterns or beliefs that may be holding you back, and we will explore ways to release them. I will support you in finding your own inner wisdom and guiding you towards a greater sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance.
By the end of our sessions, you will have a toolbox of techniques and practices that you can use to continue your growth and healing journey on your own. My goal is to empower you to tap into your own inner resources and to live a more authentic and fulfilling life. Together, we will create a safe and supportive space for you to explore, heal, and transform.
